How it works
Estimate only. Grout joint width uses a standard default; enter your own tile size and check your product with your supplier for an exact order, and add extra for pattern layout and cuts.
Tile calculator
The grout joint is part of each tile's footprint
A tile does not sit flush against its neighbors, it sits a grout joint width apart on every side, and that joint is what determines how many tiles actually fit into a square foot of floor or wall. This calculator computes the coverage per tile from the tile length, tile width and grout joint together, since these vary by tile product and installation.
Tiles are counted individually, then grouped into boxes
Unlike flooring bought by a box coverage figure printed on the box, tile is counted here from the actual tile dimensions, which is closer to how ceramic and porcelain tile is priced and sold. When you enter how many tiles come in a box, the calculator also converts the tile count into a box count, rounding up so a partial box is never left short.
Frequently asked questions
How many 12 by 12 inch tiles do I need for a 100 square foot room?
With standard 12 by 12 inch tiles and a typical grout joint, a 100 square foot room needs roughly 100 to 110 tiles including waste for cuts and breakage. Enter your own area and tile size above for the exact count.
Why does the box count show as not set?
Boxes are only calculated when you enter how many tiles come in a box, since that figure varies by product. Leave tiles needed as your ordering reference until you know the box count from the product you are buying.
How many tiles do I need for 100 square feet?
The number depends on tile size. 12 by 12 inch tiles need 100 tiles plus waste. 6 by 6 inch tiles need 400 plus waste. The calculator gives you the exact count based on your tile dimensions.
How much does tile cost per square foot?
Ceramic tile costs 1 to 5 dollars per square foot. Porcelain costs 3 to 10 dollars. Natural stone costs 5 to 20 dollars. The calculator gives you the square footage for pricing.
How much grout do I need?
Grout coverage depends on tile size and joint width. The calculator estimates grout based on your tile dimensions and joint width.
Do I need backer board for floor tile?
Yes, cement backer board provides a stable substrate for tile over wood subfloors. 1/2 inch backer board is standard. The calculator estimates tile, and you add backer board separately.
What is the waste factor for tile?
A 10 percent waste factor is standard. Diagonal patterns and complex layouts need 15 to 20 percent. The calculator lets you set the waste percentage.
Can I tile over existing tile?
Sometimes, if the existing tile is firmly attached, level, and the door swing clears the new height. The calculator gives you the area to assess.
