Paver calculator

Calculate the number of pavers for a patio, walkway or driveway, with optional base material and sand estimates.

Enter your project and paver dimensions to see the estimate.

These are estimates for planning. Edge cuts, curves, patterns and layout may require additional pavers beyond the waste allowance.

Paver calculator

The area is the starting point

Measure the project length and width in feet to get the total area in square feet. Then divide by the area each paver covers, including the joint between pavers. A standard 4x8 inch paver with a quarter-inch joint covers about 0.23 square feet. A 12x12 inch paver with the same joint covers about 1.04 square feet. The calculator does this math for whatever paver size you enter.

Base and bedding are separate materials

A paver installation needs a compacted stone base and a thin bedding layer of sand, and they are not the same material. The base is usually 4 inches of dense graded crushed stone. The bedding is about 1 inch of coarse washed sand. The calculator estimates both from your project area and depth inputs, so you can order everything together rather than making two trips.

Waste comes from cuts and breakage

Pavers at the edges of a patio almost always need to be cut. Curves and complex patterns create more waste than simple rectangles. A standard rectangular patio on a grid needs about 5 to 10 percent waste. A circular patio or one with a curve needs 10 to 15 percent. The calculator defaults to 10 percent and lets you adjust it.

Frequently asked questions

How many pavers do I need for a 10 by 10 patio?

Using standard 4x8 inch pavers with a quarter-inch joint, a 100 square foot patio needs about 435 pavers before waste. With a 10 percent allowance, buy about 479 pavers. Enter your own paver size above for the exact count.

How much base material do I need under pavers?

For a 4-inch base over 100 square feet, you need about 1.23 cubic yards of compacted crushed stone. A 1-inch bedding layer over the same area needs about 0.31 cubic yards of sand. The calculator estimates both when you enter the base and bedding depths.

How many pavers do I need for a 100 square foot patio?

The number depends on paver size. Standard 4 by 8 inch pavers need about 4.5 per square foot. The calculator gives you the exact count based on your paver dimensions.

How much does a paver patio cost per square foot?

A basic paver patio costs 8 to 15 dollars per square foot installed. Premium pavers cost more. The calculator gives you the square footage so you can price materials and get contractor quotes.

What is the best base for pavers?

A compacted gravel base of 4 to 6 inches topped with 1 inch of bedding sand is the standard. The calculator focuses on paver count, but plan your base materials separately.

Do I need edge restraints for pavers?

Yes, edge restraints keep pavers from shifting outward. They are installed around the perimeter and pinned into the base. The calculator gives you the perimeter length for edge restraint material.

How thick should pavers be for a patio?

Standard patio pavers are 2 3/8 inches thick. Driveway pavers should be at least 3 1/8 inches. The calculator counts pavers regardless of thickness.

How much sand do I need between pavers?

Polymeric sand swept into the joints fills the gaps and locks the pavers together. You need about 1 pound per square foot. The calculator gives you the paver area for estimating joint sand.
