Units

Enter wall length and height to estimate the bricks you need.

Estimate only. Brick and mortar joint dimensions use standard defaults; enter your own product dimensions with your supplier for an exact order, and add extra for openings, corners and cuts.

Brick calculator

The mortar joint is part of the footprint

A brick does not sit flush against its neighbors, it sits a mortar joint width apart from them on every side, and that joint is what actually determines how many bricks fit into a square foot of wall. This calculator computes bricks per square foot from the brick length, brick height and joint width together, rather than a single fixed rule of thumb, since these dimensions vary by brick product and region.

Wall area, not brick footprint, drives the count

The wall length times the wall height gives the total area to cover. Multiplying that area by the bricks-per-square-foot figure and adding a waste allowance for breakage and cuts gives the number of bricks to order. This is a single-wythe count for a flat wall face, it does not account for openings, corners, or a wall built more than one brick thick.

Frequently asked questions

How many bricks does a 10 by 8 foot wall need?

With standard brick and joint dimensions, a 10 by 8 foot wall face needs roughly 620 bricks before waste. Enter your own wall dimensions and brick size above for the exact count, since brick sizes vary by product.

Does this account for door and window openings?

No. This calculator counts bricks for the full wall area you enter. Subtract the area of any openings from your wall length and height figures, or calculate the openings separately and deduct their brick count, for a more accurate order.

How many bricks do I need for a 100 square foot wall?

Standard bricks at 3 5/8 by 2 1/4 inches with mortar joints need about 6.75 bricks per square foot. For 100 square feet, you need about 675 bricks. The calculator gives you the exact count.

How many bags of mortar per 1000 bricks?

You need about 3 bags of mortar mix per 1000 bricks. The calculator estimates mortar based on the brick count.

What is the standard brick size?

Standard modular bricks are 3 5/8 by 2 1/4 by 7 5/8 inches with mortar joints. The calculator lets you enter your actual brick size.

Do I need a brick veneer or solid brick wall?

Brick veneer is one layer of brick over a framed wall and is the most common residential construction. Solid brick is multiple wythes of brick. The calculator counts bricks for a single wythe.

How much waste should I add for bricks?

A 5 to 10 percent waste factor accounts for cuts and breakage. More complex patterns need more waste allowance. The calculator lets you set the waste percentage.

How long does it take to lay brick?

An experienced mason lays 300 to 500 bricks per day. The calculator gives you the total count so you can estimate the timeline.
